About the Team

Workday’s core value of integrity is the driving force behind the Workday Compliance & Integrity Team, which provides all Workmates with the knowledge and tools needed to act with integrity in all business situations, including the development of innovative artificial intelligence (AI) products and services. Workday has been named one of the World’s Most Ethical Companies for five years, by Ethisphere, a global leader in defining and advancing the standards of ethical business practice. The Responsible AI program sits within the Compliance and Integrity team within Workday’s Legal, Compliance, and Corporate Affairs organization for good reason – the mission of this program is to facilitate Workday’s ambition to develop innovative and trustworthy AI and ML products that delight customers and positively impact society. This is a purposeful, high visibility program with an ambitious agenda and executive support.

About the Role

This is an exciting opportunity to assist with the growth and maturation of a still new but rapidly growing program at Workday, Responsible AI. In order to keep up with the accelerating demand to deliver advanced and innovative AI products and technologies to our customers, we must scale our ability to govern Workday’s development of AI technologies. The Responsible AI senior data scientist role is focused on developing the analytic capabilities needed to effectively translate and implement policies, guidelines, and standards set by the Responsible AI team. This includes contributing to the development of responsible AI evaluation capabilities, creating customer-facing analysis reports and deliverables, and staying ahead of emerging methods, tools, and best practices in responsible AI (e.g., fairness, explainability, robustness, and observability) to anticipate future needs and risks and continuously advance our AI governance across evolving priority areas.

This is a collaborative role as the Responsible AI team works closely with our ML engineers, product teams, and legal and privacy teams. The Responsible AI senior data scientist will be instrumental in providing the data-driven insights necessary to guide the ethical and responsible development of Workday's AI technologies. This role offers the opportunity to work at the intersection of data science, AI ethics, and product development, contributing critical analytical capabilities to support a company-wide commitment to Responsible AI.

Responsibilities
  • Partner with functions adjacent to Responsible AI, including product, legal, privacy, and security stakeholders to interpret principles, policies, and standards, and turn them into concrete, testable requirements and evaluation plans across the AI development lifecycle.

  • Develop, maintain, and embed reusable evaluation methods and pipelines (e.g., for fairness, robustness, safety, or quality) into AI platforms and workflows so that product and engineering teams can easily test, monitor, and improve AI systems aligned to Workday’s Responsible AI governance framework

  • Define, implement, and document a curated set of metrics, evaluation templates, and best practices that teams can consistently adopt across diverse AI use cases, supporting scalable and repeatable Responsible AI governance.

  • Stay informed about developments in Responsible AI and AI evaluation, and translate relevant advances into practical recommendations, prototypes, and improvements to the team’s evaluation capabilities, with a strong focus on real-world impact.

  • Produce clear, stakeholder-facing analyses and narratives that explain evaluation approaches, findings, and tradeoffs, and act as an advocate for integrating Responsible AI considerations early and consistently in product and model development.

Our Approach to Flexible Work

With Flex Work, we’re combining the best of both worlds: in-person time and remote. Our approach enables our teams to deepen connections, maintain a strong community, and do their best work. We know that flexibility can take shape in many ways, so rather than a number of required days in-office each week, we simply spend at least half (50%) of our time each quarter in the office or in the field with our customers, prospects, and partners (depending on role). This means you'll have the freedom to create a flexible schedule that caters to your business, team, and personal needs, while being intentional to make the most of time spent together. Those in our remote "home office" roles also have the opportunity to come together in our offices for important moments that matter.

Pursuant to applicable Fair Chance law, Workday will consider for employment qualified applicants with arrest and conviction records.

Workday is an Equal Opportunity Employer including individuals with disabilities and protected veterans.

At Workday, we are committed to providing an accessible and inclusive hiring experience where all candidates can fully demonstrate their skills. If you require assistance or an accommodation at any point, please email
