Biomanufacturing was built around highly specialised facilities, complex equipment and teams of people manually operating processes that can run for days or weeks.
That model does not scale easily.
Anaula is building autonomous bioreactors designed to make biological manufacturing dramatically easier to deploy and scale.
Our systems combine advanced sensing, automated process control, robotics and software to continuously understand what is happening inside a biological process and respond in real time.
We are building the technology from first principles across mechanical engineering, electronics, controls, software and biology.
Our goal is simple: make bioreactors capable of running biological processes autonomously.
The RoleWe’re looking for a Founding Bioprocess Engineer to own the biological and pharmaceutical process side of the platform.
You’ll:
Define how Anaula reactors run biological processes
Work directly with mechanical, electronics, controls and software engineers
Turn operator judgement into measurable, executable control strategies
Act as a forward-deployed bioengineer with the CEO
Work directly with customers to understand their processes, scope pilots and help secure deployments
Own the path from prototype through scale-up and towards GMP manufacturing
This is a hands-on role with ownership over the process, the machine and how it gets deployed with customers.
What You’ll OwnUpstream process development: strain and media selection, feeding, aeration, light regime and yield
Control strategy for pH, dissolved oxygen, temperature, feeding and other critical process parameters
Measurements, decision logic and operating limits required for autonomous operation
Sterile boundaries, CIP/SIP and contamination control for long-duration unattended operation
P&IDs, process equipment, instrumentation and utilities
Scale-up from our current systems towards 400 L, 1,000 L and beyond
Technology transfer and process packages for customer deployments
HAZOPs, failure modes and process risk
The roadmap from prototype systems towards GMP manufacturing
Customer technical discussions, pilot design and deployment scoping alongside the CEO
We’re looking for someone who has:
Owned an upstream bioprocess, cell line or pharmaceutical process
5+ years of relevant experience in pharma, biopharma, a CDMO or life sciences process engineering
Strong hands-on experience with bioreactors and upstream processing
Experience operating within GMP environments
Worked across process development, scale-up and technology transfer
Experience with P&IDs, process equipment, instrumentation and utilities
Strong understanding of sterile processing, contamination control and CIP/SIP
The ability to move comfortably between biology, process engineering and automation
Enough technical depth to sit with a customer, understand their process and help design a solution around it
Relevant backgrounds may include MSAT, Process Development, Manufacturing Science, Bioprocess Engineering or Pharmaceutical Process Engineering.
What We’re Looking ForDeep understanding of upstream bioprocess fundamentals
Experience with cell culture, fermentation or other biological production systems
Strong knowledge of mass transfer, scale-up and process control
Good technical judgement and comfort making decisions with incomplete information
Strong ownership mentality
Comfortable working directly with customers
Able to communicate complex technical problems clearly
Excited by turning technical capability into real customer deployments
Build a new biomanufacturing platform from first principles
Shape the bioreactor, not just operate it
Work directly with the founders across technology and customers
Own major technical decisions from prototype through deployment
Help define Anaula’s future bioprocess team
Build towards autonomous biomanufacturing at pharmaceutical scale
