The role-

We're looking for Calculation Specialist on a 2-year Fixed term Contract (FTC) basis to join our Proposition Operations team. The role will support the effective delivery of day-to-day calculation activities across the Standard Life International product portfolio, while also contributing to our strategic migration programme. The role will translate complex calculation logic into clear, controlled and testable requirements, working closely with business specialists, developers and testing teams to support accurate outcomes. Depending on business priorities and individual capability, the role may be assigned across either competency area or may span both areas concurrently.

Key Responsibilities

General calculations

  • Act as a calculations subject matter expert, providing authoritative input and working cross-functionally with business, technology, data and testing teams.
  • Analyse, design and validate complex financial services calculations in line with applicable product rules, policy terms, legislation and regulation.
  • Assess calculation risks and apply suitable controls and mitigation when designing, reviewing or approving calculation solutions.
  • Support the investigation and remediation of calculation issues, including root-cause analysis, impact assessment and the production or checking of corrective calculations where required.
  • Maintain and develop controlled calculation tools and spreadsheets, complying with applicable End User Computing controls.
  • Apply appropriate governance, version control, peer review and quality assurance across calculation specifications, tools, outputs and supporting documentation.
  • Provide clear technical input to stakeholders, governance forums, complaints and regulatory communications where calculation expertise is required.
  • Maintain a strong working knowledge of relevant legislation, regulation, product rules and policy terms, ensuring these are accurately reflected in calculation requirements and outputs.

Migration programme

  • Lead assigned calculation analysis and specification activities within the migration programme, managing priorities and escalating risks or dependencies to the Calculations Team Manager.
  • Represent the calculations team across migration workstreams and coordinate effectively with business specialists, developers, data specialists and testing teams.
  • Elicit, analyse and document detailed requirements for calculation specifications required for migration.
  • Interrogate legacy systems, including reviewing source code, configuration, spreadsheets and supporting documentation, to establish a complete understanding of existing calculation logic.
  • Map calculation components, dependencies and sequencing in a clear logical structure.
  • Produce calculation specifications to the agreed baseline standard, with sufficient detail, traceability and control for development and testing.
  • Review and refine specifications throughout the delivery lifecycle to resolve gaps, ambiguities and defects and to support accurate migration outcomes.
  • Design comprehensive test packs covering standard, boundary, exception and historical scenarios, with clear expected results and traceability to requirements.
  • Work with developers and testers to validate migrated system outputs against specifications, investigate variances and support defect resolution.
  • Specify and supervise data-mining activities required to understand legacy populations, identify calculation scenarios and support reconciliation.
  • Maintain end-to-end traceability across migration requirements, specifications, development decisions, test evidence, defects and reconciliation outcomes.

 Key Skills:

  • Substantial experience of designing, analysing or validating complex financial services calculations, ideally within life assurance, pensions or investments.

  • Proven ability to interpret legacy calculation logic and translate it into precise, structured and testable specifications.

  • Highly numerate, with the ability to understand, challenge and create complex formulae and calculation methodologies.

  • Advanced Microsoft Excel capability; VBA experience is strongly desirable.

  • Experience of source-code review or working with technical teams to understand system calculation logic.

  • Strong requirements, technical writing and process-mapping skills, including the effective use of Word and Visio.

  • Experience of test design, expected-results production, reconciliation and defect investigation.

  • Excellent attention to detail, with a disciplined approach to documentation, version control, traceability and quality assurance.

  • Strong analytical judgement and the ability to identify risks, challenge assumptions and simplify complex technical information.

  • Clear written and verbal communication, with the ability to work effectively with business specialists, developers, testers and senior stakeholders.

  • Self-motivated and delivery-focused, with the ability to work independently, manage competing priorities and adapt within a complex migration programme.

  • Leadership, coaching or peer-review experience would be advantageous.
