Job Description:
Winchester Hospital is a Top Massachusetts recognized 223-bed regional hospital that is the leading provider of comprehensive health care services in the northwest suburban Boston area.
The Boiler Operator contributes to the Hospital’s mission by performing preventative maintenance, regulated quality checks and repairs on the hospital’s boiler systems. Also performs a wide variety of facility maintenance/renovation work, performing skilled craft work to ensure the hospital facilities are maintained/renovated to create a safe and aesthetically pleasing environment for our patients and staff. This trade position will have an impact on hospital safety by ensuring the boiler systems operate safely and on patient and staff satisfaction by minimizing downtime.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education Required: High School Diploma or equivalent. Two (2) additional relevant trade experiences may be considered in lieu of education.
Experience Required: At least two years of maintenance experience
Experience Preferred: Experience operating and repairing boilers
Skills/Knowledge Required:
- For safety and quality reasons, must be able to read, write and communicate effectively in English with patients, visitors and fellow members of the hospital team.
- Able to perform work with minimal supervision and/or direction.
Skills/Knowledge Preferred:
- Ability to read and comprehend blueprints.
License and Certifications Required:
- Valid driver’s license
- 2nd Class Fireman certificate or higher
JOB FUNCTIONS
Boiler Operator:
- Monitors, tests, adjusts, cleans, greases and performs minor repairs on the hospital’s high- and low-pressure boiler systems in accordance with safety and regulatory requirements.
- Takes and tests water samples and adds appropriate water softening agents and makes other required adjustment to achieve appropriate water conditions.
- Fires boiler to generate and maintain specified steam pressure for hospital heating, hot water, sterilizer, etc.
- Oils and greases moving mechanisms
- When appropriate escalates repairs of boilers. Properly assesses urgency and recommends the consultation of outside repair vendors and/or new equipment. Upon receiving approval, coordinates boiler repairs.
Maintenance Mechanic:
- Responds to Service Response Center pages to investigate and then resolve calls according to the program.
- Conducts rounds and performs daily shift inspection of the facilities and utility systems.
- Performs preventative maintenance work on systems, equipment, facilities, and structure in assigned area. Establishes and maintains an effective preventative maintenance routine and schedule that complies with and maximizes operations and facility safety.
- Monitors Life Safety Code compliance in areas assigned and reports violations and concerns through the proper chain of command.
- Assists with snow removal and other projects as requested by supervisor.
- Views the user group as the customer and collaborates with them to address their needs.
Both:
- Detects and reports improper operation, faulty equipment, defective materials and unsafe and/or unusual conditions to supervisor.
- Does all possible to minimize the disruption associated with the required work.
- Performs all required documentation accurately, legibly and timely.
- Assists other team members within licensure allowances.
- Determines materials and supplies needed for projects/work, prepares requisitions, orders supply and maintains adequate levels of stock to eliminate lag time in projects. Receives and stores materials in the boiler rooms and mechanical space
