Zscaler Employee Perspectives

At Zscaler, we believe your next great career challenge is often found right here. Internal mobility is one of the ways we empower our people, giving our employees the opportunity to grow their career, take on greater ownership, and make a bigger impact—and you’re in the driver’s seat. We recently sat down with Gaurav S S to learn more about his successful pivot from a DevTest Engineer to a Software Development Engineer.

What’s it like to work on the engineering team at your company?

Working on the engineering team at Zscaler has been transformative. I joined the company as an intern and was immediately immersed in high-impact work; not side projects, but core infrastructure that serves millions of global users. At Zscaler, engineering goes far beyond writing code; I’m encouraged to understand our customers’ perspectives and collaborate fluidly across our global, cross-functional teams. What truly sets our culture apart is how intentionally we invest in human connection. Our monthly outdoor team lunches create space for genuine conversations that strengthen our relationships, building the foundation of trust that makes our technical collaboration so effective. Everyone, from senior architects to new engineers, is approachable and invested in each other’s success. It’s an environment where your contributions are highly visible and meaningful from day one.

How does your team support learning, upskilling or technical growth for engineers?

Some of my best learning has happened from being curious, like asking an architect a quick question that turned into a 30-minute whiteboard session or going through a code review where a peer took the time to explain not just what to fix, but why it mattered. That’s how this team operates. There’s no gatekeeping of knowledge; people are genuinely excited to share what they know. My growth is also supported through the autonomy I’m given to lean into the specific areas that genuinely excite me; that passion is reflected across the team. Zscaler also offers ZSource, an internal learning platform that keeps me plugged into emerging tech and AI trends. Ultimately, my growth here has not just been technical; collaborating closely with customers and cross-functional teams across global time zones has made me a much more complete engineer.

What kinds of projects or challenges help engineers build new skills on your team?

One of the most growth-accelerating challenges here is diving into our codebase. It’s a large, mature codebase handling real network security at massive scale, which can feel humbling at first. But that’s exactly where the growth happens. I’ve worked on high-stakes areas like firewall layers and our intrusion prevention system where a bug can affect real users in production, which raises your standards fast. What surprised me most was how much of the skill-building happened around the code. Coordinating with teammates across time zones taught me to communicate complex ideas clearly and concisely. Getting exposed to how customers experience the product that I developed changed how I think about trade-offs. Collaborating on end-to-end problems gave me a systems-level perspective I couldn’t have gotten any other way. Every project here stretches you in new directions.

What new skill or role did you want to learn, and why is this important to you?

As a solutions engineer, I was deeply comfortable in the technical lane, but I always felt the pull toward the business side of the conversation. I wanted to understand why deals stall, how executives make decisions and what it truly takes to align technology with business outcomes. I set my sights on developing skills in champion-building, navigating organizational charts upstream, executive stakeholder management and complex deal orchestration. For me, this wasn’t just about a title change; it was about becoming a complete go-to-market professional who could sit across the table from a chief information officer and speak their language. In enterprise sales, technical credibility only takes you so far; the real differentiator is your ability to build trust at every level of an organization and tie every conversation back to business impact. That was the skill set I was determined to build.

How did Zscaler help support this time of learning and/or professional development?

Zscaler’s support was hands-on and genuinely intentional. The Buddy Program paired me with seasoned account executives who openly shared their playbooks on deal strategy, objection handling and executive communication. I received direct mentorship from leadership, who invested their time coaching me on territory management, pipelines and long-cycle deals. Beyond structured programs, the real magic happened in the field. I was included in live customer meetings, shadowed product specialists and was trusted to progressively take ownership of client conversations. It wasn’t classroom learning; it was real-world, in-the-moment development. Zscaler genuinely creates an environment where, if you show a hunger to grow, the organization leans in to meet you there.

What was the outcome of this experience? How did it impact your future growth in your profession?

The outcome was a professional journey I’m incredibly proud of, transitioning from solutions engineer to senior solutions consultant, and now to account executive at Zscaler. Each step wasn’t just a role change; it was a mindset evolution. Moving into the AE role within the enterprise segment meant I was now fully owning the revenue relationship from the first call to close, navigating complex multi-stakeholder environments and driving outcomes that matter to the business. The skills I built — executive engagement, champion development and deal strategy — have become my everyday toolkit. More than anything, this journey taught me that growth at Zscaler isn’t accidental. It’s the result of a culture that invests in its people, provides stretch opportunities and trusts them to rise. I am a direct product of that culture, and it shapes how I show up for my customers every single day.

Zscaler’s investment in my master’s degree is a powerful example of how we invest in employee development in meaningful ways. This opportunity encouraged me to stretch, made continuing education more accessible, and reinforced that my growth matters. Strengthening my skillset, knowledge, and confidence has enabled me to bring even more value back to my team and the business.
