UX Designer – E-commerce Research & Experience

SteelSeries is rebuilding its web and e-commerce experience! We are looking for a UX Designer with a deep focus on design systems, user research, personas/cohorts, and data-informed experience design to partner with our Design Lead, Product Managers, and engineering teams.

This role will own the research and customer understanding side of UX, translating insights into actionable design direction and helping deliver a world‑class shopping experience for gamers across mobile, and desktop. You will be the bridge between stakeholders, product, and engineering—ensuring that what we build is deeply grounded in user needs and measurable business outcomes.

Key Responsibilities (Prioritized)

1. User Research, Personas & Insights (Core Focus)

  • Plan, conduct, and synthesize qualitative and quantitative research (usability tests, interviews, surveys, concept tests, diary studies where relevant) for key e-commerce journeys (browse, PDP, cart, checkout, support, etc.).

  • Perform usability testing on in-flight and existing experiences; identify friction points and prioritize issues based on impact and severity.

  • Work with Marketing to Design and analyze surveys to capture shopper and retail associate feedback; translate findings into clear, prioritized recommendations.

  • Develop, maintain, and evolve data-backed personas and customer cohorts, incorporating behavioral analytics, survey data, and qualitative insights.

  • Create customer journey maps, task flows, and experience blueprints that articulate pain points, opportunities, and success metrics.

  • Partner with analytics teams (or use tools directly) to connect UX research with quantitative signals (conversion, funnel drop-off, time on task, search behavior, etc.).

2. Experience Design & Delivery

  • Work with Product Managers, UX leadership, peers, developers, and stakeholders to conceptualize, design, and refine intuitive e-commerce experiences and components across devices.

  • Develop and maintain interactive wireframes, flows, and prototypes (low to high-fidelity) to support product definition, experimentation, and development.

  • Analyze user interface problems and create design solutions that balance user needs, technical constraints, and measurable business goals.

  • Take part in ideation, scoping, and discovery for new features and initiatives, contributing customer and research perspectives to roadmap decisions.

  • Clearly articulate design rationale and seek feedback early and often from stakeholders.

3. Cross-Functional Collaboration & Execution

  • Act as a bridge between Product, Engineering, and stakeholders, ensuring user needs are translated into clear requirements and acceptance criteria.

  • Partner closely with Engineering and QA to ensure UI designs are implemented to spec and perform as expected in real-world conditions.

  • Collaborate with Product Managers to define hypotheses, success metrics, and test plans for UX improvements (e.g., A/B tests, multivariate tests).

  • Communicate research findings and design decisions in a way that is accessible, compelling, and actionable for non-design audiences.

4. Design Systems & UX Quality

  • Collaborate with the UI/UX Lead on maintaining consistency with the emerging design language, component library, and interaction patterns across SteelSeries experiences.

  • Provide input and feedback on design system evolution, ensuring components support real customer needs and e-commerce use cases.

  • Contribute to best practices, standards, and guidelines for UX and research within the team.

5. Continuous Improvement & Learning

  • Stay current on e-commerce UX patterns, experimentation methods, and research tools; bring relevant ideas back to the team.

  • Mentor or support junior designers or cross-functional partners in basic research methods and UX-thinking.

  • Show clear communication abilities and a growth-oriented mindset, regularly requesting feedback and applying it to improve your work.

Qualifications

Must-Have

  • 4+ years of experience in UX/Product Design, with a meaningful portion focused on e-commerce experiences (DTC, retail, or marketplace).

  • Demonstrated experience planning and running user research: usability testing, interviews, surveys, and synthesis into personas, journeys, and clear recommendations.

  • Demonstrated ability to design for complex flows such as catalog browsing, product discovery, checkout, account management, or similar.

  • Advanced proficiency with modern design and prototyping tools (e.g., Figma, Sketch, XD, or similar).

  • Experience working in cross-functional product teams (PM, engineering, data, marketing, operations).

  • Ability to define and track UX success metrics in partnership with Product and Analytics (e.g., conversion, drop-off, NPS, CSAT, task success).

  • Excellent written and verbal communication; comfortable presenting to stakeholders at different levels.

  • Portfolio that shows end-to-end ownership from research and insight through to shipped experiences and measurable impact.

Nice-to-Have

  • Experience in gaming, consumer electronics, or enthusiast communities.

  • Familiarity with Contentful, SFCC, or other enterprise e-commerce/CMS platforms.

  • Experience with A/B testing & experimentation platforms.

  • Experience building and maintaining research repositories and scalable research ops practices.
