Role Overview
As a System Platform Engineer 1, you will support the build, maintenance, and operation of Unix-based systems and virtualisation platforms. This is a hands-on technical role focused on learning and contributing to the stability, performance, and security of core infrastructure services. You will work closely with senior engineers and cross-functional teams to ensure systems are reliable, secure, and meet business needs.
This role is ideal for someone early in their career who is passionate about Unix/Linux systems, eager to learn, and ready to grow into a more senior engineering position.
Key Responsibilities• Leveraging strong problem-solving skills and help root cause analysis expertise to diagnose issues, ensuring minimal downtime and optimal performance.• Assist in the deployment, configuration, and maintenance of Unix/Linux systems (RedHat, OEL, Solaris).• Support virtualisation platforms including VMware and Oracle VM (OVM).• Monitor system performance and availability, escalating issues as needed.• Participate in patching, upgrades, and basic lifecycle management tasks.• Document system configurations, procedures, and changes.• Collaborate with senior engineers to troubleshoot and resolve incidents.• Contribute to automation efforts using scripting and tools like Ansible or Terraform.• Apply ITIL service management practices in daily operations.• Support compliance and audit activities by maintaining system hygiene and documentation.• Engage in knowledge-sharing and training sessions to build technical expertise.• Help Troubleshooting technical issues where the root cause is not apparent and may lie outside of your core skill set.• Working across multiple projects and adapting to changing priorities.• Working with multiple vendors and client's staff to deliver projects and resolve support incidents.• Work with stake holders and represent Unix team wherever required• Actively seek opportunities to learn and grow and show enthusiasm for expanding your skills and knowledge.• Consciously develop a work-life-learn balance• Jump out of your comfort zone and be ready to apply your learning• Agile methodology, Project handling and BAU delivery
Experience & Qualifications• 2+ years of experience in Unix/Linux system administration or related IT infrastructure role.• Familiarity with RedHat, Oracle Linux, or Solaris operating systems.• Exposure to virtualisation technologies (VMware, OVM) is a plus.• Basic understanding of networking concepts (TCP/IP, DNS, SSH).• Experience with shell scripting (Bash, Perl, etc.) or Python is desirable.• Awareness of ITIL processes and Agile methodologies.• Strong desire to learn and grow in a technical engineering environment.• Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.
