Our Mission
Healthcare should work for patients, but it doesn’t. In their time of need, they call down outdated insurance directories. Then wait on hold. Then wait weeks for the privilege of a visit. Then wait in a room solely designed for waiting. Then wait for a surprise bill. In any other consumer industry, the companies delivering such a poor customer experience would not survive. But in healthcare, patients lack market power. Which means they are expected to accept the unacceptable.
Zocdoc’s mission is to give power to the patient. To do that, we’ve built the leading healthcare marketplace that makes it easy to find and book in-person or virtual care in all 50 states, across +200 specialties and +12k insurance plans. By giving patients the ability to see and choose, we give them power. In doing so, we can make healthcare work like every other consumer sector, where businesses compete for customers, not the other way around. In time, this will drive quality up and prices down.
We’re 17 years old and the leader in our space, but we are still just getting started. If you like solving important, complex problems alongside deeply thoughtful, driven, and collaborative teammates, read on.
Your Impact on Our Mission:
As a Staff Database Reliability Engineer (DBRE) at Zocdoc, you’ll play a pivotal role in evolving our database architecture from a traditional administration model to a modern, cloud-native reliability platform. You’ll help define and execute the technical strategy that enables fast, safe, and scalable data operations across the company.
You’ll lead efforts to make our data systems observable, resilient, and self-serviceable—empowering development, infrastructure, and data teams to move quickly while maintaining safety, compliance, and performance. Your work will shape how Zocdoc thinks about data reliability at scale, and influence engineering standards across teams.
You’ll thrive in this role if you…
- Are a systems thinker who approaches data as a foundational service—not just a store
- Enjoy building patterns and platforms that allow others to succeed safely
- Have a strong point of view on data governance, quality, and lifecycle management
- Influence across organizations through strategy, clarity, and technical credibility
- Believe in enabling developers through tooling, automation, and well-designed defaults
Your day to day is…
- Architect and evolve scalable, secure, and observable database systems across cloud-native (e.g., AWS RDS, DynamoDB, Aurora) and traditional relational platforms (e.g., SQL Server)
- Define and implement patterns for schema governance, data lineage, quality assurance, and access control across services and teams
- Lead modernization efforts by replacing legacy systems with infrastructure-as-code, automated provisioning, and scalable platform patterns
- Build reusable modules, tooling, and guardrails that help teams self-serve safely while meeting compliance, reliability, and cost-efficiency goals
- Lead the end-to-end detection and response for database incidents—taking rapid, decisive action to minimize risk to users, data integrity, and business operations.
- Drive post-incident analysis and systemic improvements to raise the bar for operational excellence in data systems
- Partner with developers, SREs, platform teams, and data engineers to align architecture and execution with business needs and reliability standards
- Mentor and influence engineers across teams by sharing knowledge, reviewing designs, and modeling high standards for data reliability.
You’ll be successful in this role if you have…
- 8+ years of experience building and operating production-grade data infrastructure
- Deep fluency in cloud-native databases (e.g., RDS, DynamoDB, Redshift, Aurora) and relational systems (e.g., SQL Server, PostgreSQL)
- Proven experience in designing high-throughput, low-latency, and fault-tolerant data architectures
- Strong hands-on experience with infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, CDK) and observability platforms (e.g., dashboards, SLOs, alerting)
- A track record of building tools and patterns that enable self-service and reduce operational overhead
- Experience designing and enforcing systems for schema evolution, regulatory compliance, and data governance
- Demonstrated ability to lead initiatives, mentor peers, and shape engineering direction across functions
