MongoDB’s mission is to empower innovators to create, transform, and disrupt industries by unleashing the power of software and data. We enable organizations of all sizes to easily build, scale, and run modern applications by helping them modernize legacy workloads, embrace innovation, and unleash AI. Our industry-leading developer data platform, MongoDB Atlas, is the only globally distributed, multi-cloud database and is available in more than 115 regions across AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure. Atlas allows customers to build and run applications anywhere—on premises, or across cloud providers. With offices worldwide and over 175,000 new developers signing up to use MongoDB every month, it’s no wonder that leading organizations, like Samsung and Toyota, trust MongoDB to build next-generation, AI-powered applications.
The Atlas API Experience (APIx) teams are part of MongoDB Atlas Data Services, a diverse group of individuals who develop the capabilities to run MongoDB globally (see MongoDB Atlas). Our software and services allow users to deploy fault-tolerant, scalable, globally distributed MongoDB clusters in minutes. APIx’s mission is to craft delightful experiences for developers of all levels onboarding and working with MongoDB.
We’re looking for a Staff Engineer to lead the design and evolution of our API platform, which is central to how our enterprise customers and internal teams interact with our core database technologies. This platform underpins mission-critical developer workflows, enables automation via declarative tools like Terraform, and ensures API standards across our ecosystem.
You’ll work at the intersection of platform architecture, developer experience, and API governance. As a technical leader on the team, you’ll set the direction for how we build, version, secure, and evolve our APIs, ensuring they are standards-compliant, reliable, and easy to consume.
We are seeking passionate, intrinsically motivated software engineers who consistently strive to grow their skills and aspire to take their careers to the next level. No prior experience with MongoDB technologies is required! During interviews, you will meet most of our team and have the opportunity to ask questions about working at MongoDB. We pride ourselves on our team's culture and on being an inclusive and collaborative group that Builds Together.
We are looking to speak to candidates who are based in Dublin for our hybrid working model.
What will you do?- Shape the platform strategy in alignment with the company and product goals. Propose and lead initiatives that improve developer efficiency and customer satisfaction
- Evolve the API platform that powers customer-facing functionality across Atlas, enabling internal development teams to deliver features and serve enterprise customers at scale. Focus areas include platform lifecycle, availability, observability & developer enablement
- Ensure integration with modern auth standards, such as OAuth2 and OIDC, in a way that’s secure and compatible with popular client libraries
- Collaborate deeply with internal teams (e.g., engineering, product, SRE, security) to ensure the platform meets broad engineering needs
- Enable the downstream development of declarative tools (e.g., Terraform, Pulumi) by ensuring the API platform aligns with their workflows and state management paradigms
- Establish and evangelize best practices for API design, observability, code generation, and documentation across engineering teams, e.g. Improvement Proposal for APIs (IPA)
- Act as a technical mentor and leader, helping maintain a high bar of engineering excellence and decision-making
- Foster an inclusive and respectful work environment according to MongoDB's Core Values
We understand not everyone will meet all the qualifications on day one. That's okay. If you’re passionate about technology and want to grow your skills, we encourage you to apply.
- Enjoys collaboration and being part of a team, with experience in technical leadership
- Proven expertise building production API platforms at scale, ideally for internal platform teams and/or enterprise-facing products
- Strong background in API lifecycle management, OpenAPI/Swagger or similar
- A track record of delivering backwards-compatible APIs and building systems that reduce the risk of breaking changes
- Strong communication skills — you’re equally comfortable writing an RFC, mentoring a teammate, or presenting to leadership
- Approachable, curious, and intellectually honest
- In 3 months, you'll have shipped code into production and collaborated with the team to solve challenging problems
- You will have built strong relationships with your team and the Atlas organization
- In 6 months, you'll have contributed to a large project, driving improvements in your areas of ownership
- In 12 months, you will have designed new features, led development work, and become a go-to expert on parts of the system
- Generous compensation package (top-range salary, equity, comprehensive benefits)
- Flexible working options (not a strict 9-6 role, focus on results, not the appearance of work)
- Influence engineering standards and culture across a growing global team
- A high level of independence in your day-to-day work. Propose innovative solutions to existing problems and own the delivery from start to finish
- Opportunities to learn on the job (time and support to upskill in new technologies and learn new programming languages, as well as an allowance for educational material)
- You'll be joining a good-humoured, encouraging team that deeply cares about its culture and wants to combine work and fun!
- Upon joining, you will have the opportunity to learn everything there is to know about MongoDB via specialised training on the MongoDB University platform and highly supportive colleagues
