The SRE Team sits within LearnUpon’s Platform Engineering group and is focused on overall infrastructure availability and scalability. 

As a Database Administrator within the SRE team, you will take the lead in managing and optimizing MySQL databases, ensuring their performance, security, and reliability. You will be  responsible for planning and developing database strategy, troubleshooting issues, and working with developers to implement the storage strategy supporting new features.

The role will suit someone with deep experience in managing multiple database environments in MySql and working in close collaboration with the SRE team on the storage and compute hosting of these environments in AWS.


What will I be doing?

On a day-to-day basis you will be performing a number of duties, including:

  • Database Management: Installing, configuring, upgrading, and managing MySQL database systems
  • Performance Optimization: Tuning databases, monitoring performance, and identifying bottlenecks
  • Security: Implementing and maintaining security measures to protect data from unauthorized access
  • Backup and Recovery: Implementing backup and recovery strategies to ensure data integrity and availability
  • Problem Solving: Troubleshooting database issues, diagnosing problems, and resolving errors
  • Collaboration: Liaising with Engineering teams on Database Schema design, alterations, and good practices
  • Capacity Planning: Planning resource requirements for database growth and changes
  • Supporting the Engineering teams on Database operational issues including incidents

What skills do I need? 

  • Experience in developing database strategies to improve scalability, stability, and accommodate growth
  • Strong understanding of MySQL syntax, data structures, and performance tuning techniques
  • Proficiency in SQL for data manipulation, querying, and database management 
  • Knowledge of operating systems (esp Linux) and interaction with databases 
  • Problem-Solving and Analytical Skills: Ability to diagnose and resolve complex database issues 
  • Communication Skills: Ability to communicate technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences

Not required but considered a big plus

  • Familiarity with other SQL/NoSQL databases can be beneficial. 
  • Familiarity with modern cloud computing Database infrastructure and managed services (AWS RDS / Aurora / etc)
