About the RoleApplied Materials is seeking a hands-on Software Engineering Manager to lead software delivery within the Plasma Diagnostics Center of Excellence (CoE). The CoE develops differentiated, software-enabled, plasma diagnostics that directly support Applied’s future technology nodes and product portfolio.
This role exists to materially increase the delivery speed, reliability, and scalability of the software team by providing architectural leadership, establishing robust development systems, leveraging modern tools and techniques, and growing the team’s technical capability.
Reporting to the Director of R&D, this role leads a small, co-located software team in Dublin and works closely with physics, hardware, and systems engineering. The role also interfaces with other Applied Materials Centers of Excellence to leverage existing capabilities and multiply impact across the diagnostics portfolio.
This is not a passive people-manager role. It is a technical leadership position focused on defining how software is built, raising execution standards, and preparing the organization to scale while balancing speed, rigor, and long-term maintainability.
Key ResponsibilitiesTechnical Leadership & Architecture- Provide hands-on technical leadership, deep-diving as needed to resolve architectural, reliability, or system-level issues.
- Define and drive software architecture for the diagnostics product portfolio, including embedded and edge-based platforms and integration into Applied tools.
- Translate ambiguous or loosely defined requirements into clear, scalable, and maintainable software designs.
- Accelerate feature release by establishing robust software systems, including CI/CD, automated testing, coding standards, and architectural documentation.
- Cross-disciplinary partner for algorithm development and signal processing.
- Champion effective use of AI and ML across the software lifecycle.
- Leverage LLM-based tools to improve productivity, insight, and delivery speed.
- Design and implement ML models for inference on edge and embedded systems.
- Define guardrails to ensure AI and ML solutions add value, are robust, interpretable, scalable, and production appropriate.
- Accelerate software delivery while improving robustness, determinism, and long-term maintainability.
- Drive a shift from ad hoc implementation toward design, architect, then execute, with explicit trade-offs and clear ownership.
- Build end-to-end accountability so engineers own solutions from requirements distillation through deployment and sustainment.
- Act as the escalation point for complex software issues during product development and qualification.
- Lead, coach, and develop a small software team, setting clear expectations around technical rigor, accountability, and ownership.
- Stabilize execution, raise quality and delivery discipline, and identify capability gaps required for future growth.
- Influence contributors beyond direct reports by defining consistent software standards and ways of working across the CoE and aligned CoEs.
- BSc in Computer Science, Software/System Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
- 7+ years of professional software engineering experience, including technical leadership of complex systems.
- Proven ability to architect solutions across embedded, real-time, and edge-based software environments.
- Experience driving improvements in delivery through architecture, tooling, and development processes.
- Comfortable operating hands-on when required.
- Experience working at the intersection of software, hardware, physics, and applied algorithms.
- Prior technical leadership of small teams; formal people-management experience is a plus.
You’ll join a small, high-autonomy R&D organization within Applied Materials that delivers differentiated diagnostics critical to future technology nodes. This role offers real technical ownership, broad influence, and a flexible growth path toward senior management or principal technical leadership as the CoE scales.
