eBay’s traffic engineering team is responsible for building and managing platforms that currently handle all of eBay public and private site traffic. As a part of the traffic engineering team, the ideal candidate will collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to deliver the platform and contribute to open source projects. The candidate will be working on building a very resilient distributed system at eBay’s edges that can proxy all of eBay traffic and  also eBay’s service mesh for all of our services with unparalleled observability.

We are seeking an experienced engineer our Traffic Team Engineer role at eBay in Dublin, Ireland. This role requires a deep understanding of networking, proficiency in programming languages such as C++ and Go, experience with Kubernetes, and a strong background in cyber security, caching strategies, and Points of Presence (PoP) optimization.

The ideal candidate will have experience in the field, focusing on optimizing traffic flow, improving system performance, and ensuring scalable and secure network operations. You will also lead efforts in contributing to open-source projects, implementing observability practices, and developing patented technologies to monitor and ensure the reliability of our systems.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design, development, and maintenance of traffic management solutions.

  • Optimize network protocols, configurations, and Points of Presence (PoP).

  • Develop and implement advanced caching strategies to improve system efficiency.

  • Develop high-performance applications in C++ and Go.

  • Deploy and manage scalable systems on Kubernetes.

  • Oversee cyber security measures to protect network infrastructure.

  • Implement observability tools and practices to monitor system performance and health.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate networking solutions.

  • Monitor and analyze traffic patterns and security threats.

  • Contribute to and lead open-source projects.

  • Innovate and develop patented technologies to improve network capabilities.

  • Mentor junior engineers and lead technical teams.

  • Stay updated with the latest developments in network technologies, security practices, and software development.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.

  • At least 8 years of proven experience in networking, traffic management, and cyber security.

  • Strong programming skills in C++ and Go.

  • Experience with TCP/IP networking

  • Familiarity with TCP, SSL and HTTP Protocols.

  • Expertise in using Kubernetes for orchestrating containerized applications.

  • Experience with observability tools and practices.

  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and leadership skills.

  • Strong communication and teamwork abilities.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with Envoy for traffic control.

  • Experience contributing to and leading open-source projects.

  • Certifications in networking, Kubernetes, cyber security, or related fields.

  • Experience in a high-traffic, large-scale environment.

  • Familiarity with additional programming languages, including Java, or frameworks.

  • Proficiency in Agile development methodologies.

  • Experience in patent creation and innovation.

  • Experience in implementing caching strategies and optimizing PoPs.
