What this job can offer you

This is an exciting time to join Remote and make a personal difference in the global HR-tech space as a Senior Legal Counsel - Employment, joining our Legal Team. We are looking for a talented and eager employment lawyer, who is interested in helping with our team’s mission, namely: to deliver pragmatic and innovative legal solutions for Remote’s products and stakeholders, while protecting Remote from unacceptable risk.

As Remote is increasing its global footprint, every expansion into a new country brings myriad legal issues. The Legal Team is responsible for the legal soundness of our business models, contractual agreements with clients and their staff (i.e. the employees we hire under our “Employer of Record” service – our “external employees”), legally compliant employee management and data protection compliance amongst other areas.

The team is built of talented highly motivated lawyers from a whole host of different countries, with some awesome experiences and we are looking for a great match for them. This role is a individual contributor position within the Employment, Product & Commercial Legal team, a sub-team of our Legal Team.

We want to empower team members to Own (one of our five core values) their projects and tasks. They nevertheless have support, leadership and guidance from our Chief Legal Officer who has run Legal teams in two fast-paced scale ups.

Our Employment Specialists team is primarily responsible for:

  • Supporting our Employee Lifecycle and People teams in managing internal and external employees;
  • Ensuring Remote products’ and platform’s compliance with employment laws across jurisdictions; and
  • Assisting other teams such as our International Operations team with expanding into new territories and and Product team in streamlining our product.

If you’re excited by the idea of combining local legal depth with global reach, this one’s for you.

Expertise

This role is for an employment lawyer qualified and licensed to practice in Spain. You’ll bring deep, practical expertise in Spanish labor law, including onboarding, contracts, benefits, employee relations, and terminations.

You’ll be Remote’s go-to expert for all things Spain, advising on compliance, resolving employee lifecycle issues, and helping build thoughtful, scalable processes that support our clients and their team members in-country. You'll also be expected to collaborate across borders, advising on international employment challenges as part of our growing global legal team.

Key responsibilities

  • Advise on a wide range of employment law issues across multiple jurisdictions, including advising on complex internal and external employee matters
  • Develop excellent template contracts and knowledge resources
  • Ensure Remote operates a compliant workforce across all territories
  • Help with strategic thinking around our business model and future opportunities
  • Solve legal issues rather than escalating problems
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to ensure timely and effective completion of projects, managing risks and aligning with business objectives
  • Contribute to the Legal Team's knowledge base and expertise while working to build your own unique knowledge base within the Team
  • Master employment law and contracts for particular region or regions (AMEA, AMS, APAC, etc.) and different employment law subject matters (terminations, employee management, onboardings, compliance, litigation etc.)
  • Identify company-wide employment law legal issues and work with key internal stakeholders and external partners to implement efficient and effective solutions

What you bring

  • Experience in advisory and contentious employment law including the entire employee lifecycle (recruitment, HR policies, benefits, and terminations are the key areas)
  • Interested in working for a tech-scaleup and specifically HR-tech
  • Keen to understand a whole range of international employment law challenges rather than just focusing on the territory in which you’ve trained.
  • Ability to learn and master Remote's communication application (Slack), documentation sources (Notion, Google Drive, etc.), and task management system (KissFlow)
  • Writes and speaks fluent English and Spanish

Bonus points

  • Previous in-house experience
  • Understanding of employment agreements in multiple countries
  • Experience in contentious employment work
  • Fluent in multiple languages
  • Experience working remotely

Practicals

  • You'll report to: Managing Counsel - Employment
  • Team: Legal
  • Location: Remote
  • Start date: As soon as possible

Remote Compensation Philosophy

Remote's Total Rewards philosophy is to ensure fair, unbiased compensation and fair equity pay along with competitive benefits in all locations in which we operate. We do not agree to or encourage cheap-labor practices and therefore we ensure to pay above in-location rates. We hope to inspire other companies to support global talent-hiring and bring local wealth to developing countries.

At first glance our salary bands seem quite wide - here is some context. At Remote we have international operations and a globally distributed workforce.  We use geo ranges to consider geographic pay differentials as part of our global compensation strategy to remain competitive in various markets while we hiring globally.
The base salary range for this full-time position is $54,400 USD - $91,000 USD. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level and location, and our job titles may span more than one career level. The actual base pay for the successful candidate in this role is dependent upon many factors such as location, transferable or job-related skills, work experience, relevant training, business needs, and market demands. The base salary range may be subject to change.

At Remote, we foster internal mobility as a key element of our culture of employee growth and development, supported by a compensation philosophy that guarantees pay equity and fairness. Therefore, all compensation changes associated with an internal move will be reviewed by the Total Rewards & People Enablement team on a case by case basis.
