One of the leading causes of catastrophic wildfires and power outages? Trees and brush coming into contact with power lines.
That’s where we help. At Overstory, we use AI and advanced satellite imagery to pinpoint and prioritize vegetation risks before they materialize. By giving utilities critical analysis on those risks, we’re helping prevent outages, reduce wildfire risks, and accelerate the transition to a safer, more resilient grid.

The role
There are two open positions being hired by this role. The first involves working with engineers on the Data Ingestion team to ingest satellite imagery and other geospatial data from external sources, and curating that data for downstream teams. The second is working with Machine Learning Engineers (MLEs) on the Vegetation modelling team to create data products from satellite imagery and other geospatial data. Candidates are encouraged to share their preferences on these two ways of working as they learn more about Overstory and their desired role in the organization.
In either role, you will contribute by building and maintaining data pipelines, creating new processes to efficiently scale our data processing and/or modelling capabilities, and mentoring more junior engineers and/or MLEs. You will collaborate heavily with your team members and people all across the organization.
What you will do
Over the next 6-12 months you will be working on:
- Optimizing existing processes and creating new systems.
- Reduce the amount of manual work required to process different types of geospatial data.
- Performance & Scalability: ensure that our processes can handle 3x YoY growth
You will be an influential member of the team taking the lead on and contributing to key initiatives. Additionally you will coach and mentor other engineers on the team.
About You
- Passionate about climate
- Approximately 6+ years of experience in Data Engineering.
- Product minded and able to demonstrate significant impact you have had on a business through the application of technology
- Proven experience of geospatial data engineering across the following (or similar) technologies: Python, GDAL/OGR, Data pipelines, PostGIS DB, QGIS).
- Comfortable working in a build it, run it environment (GCP, cloud run, grafana, k8s) - or similar.
- Ability to design and implement scalable and resilient systems.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively in a cross-functional team environment.
- Passion for learning and staying updated with evolving technologies and industry trends.
- You are based in GMT/ CET time zone

About our team
We are a group of 64 people from all over the world. Fifteen nationalities are represented in our team. We work remotely from nine different countries and we are looking for candidates that are also living and working in one of these countries: United States, the Netherlands, United Kingdom, Ireland, Estonia, Portugal, Spain, France, Sweden and Canada. We meet up once a year in-person for our unforgettable team gathering event. We also offer the option to occasionally meet up for in-person collaboration.
