The Database Services team supports WEX business critical database systems. As a Principal Database Administrator, you will join a team of DBAs currently supporting over 100 servers.
In order to be successful in this role, you need to be able to work in a fast-paced and constantly changing environment. You must be a self-starter and professional who can successfully bring projects to closure with a minimum of direction, guidance and oversight. You also need to be able to manage and balance your time between strategic and tactical activities.
About the role:

You will work with a team of peers to build robust, reliable and effective database management solutions for all lines of business.

You will provide technical direction and database expertise for complex data repository challenges. Build and maintain documentation, internal technical white papers, IT proposals, and vendor requests for information.

You will participate in after-hours project or maintenance work (nights & weekends) and share on-call responsibilities with other team members

You will design, build, implement, support and operationalize WEX business critical database systems.
Experience you'll bring

In-depth (10+ years) Microsoft SQL Server experience
-
Experience with Windows Failover Clustering, Always On Availability Groups, and other related HA techniques
-
Expert SQL Server performance troubleshooting and tuning skills (sql and stored procedures)
-
Strong technical expertise in multiple MSSQL related areas (profiling, extended events, replication, performance tuning, monitoring, data purging/migration techniques, advanced T-SQL writing, automation, etc)

Experience managing SQL Server in AWS (EC2 and RDS)
-
Experience managing SQL Server in Azure (IaaS and SQL MI/Azure SQL)
-
Experience and comfort using both Linux and Windows
-
Exceptional problem-solving abilities

No objections to flexible hours and after hours support for on call rotations
Preferred Experience

PowerShell or comparable scripting languages

Terraform or comparable infrastructure as code tooling

Datadog (configuration, YAML, creating dashboards, custom metrics, and ingesting files)

MSSQL monitoring tools such as SentryOne or SQL Diagnostic Manager
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

10+ years of related experience working with multiple versions of SQL Server

Requires strong technical expertise in multiple areas (log shipping, replication, performance tuning, monitoring, data purging /migration techniques, automation, etc)

Experience with long term scalability and capacity planning

Experience in technical lead role on projects

Requires analytical ability, strong judgment, problem solving skills, and effective human relations skills to work cross functionally across the Enterprise with staff and all levels of management in various disciplines

Uses professional concepts and company objectives to resolve complex issues in creative and effective ways.

Ability to function in a complex environment thru multi-tasking and establishing and communicating priorities

Strong interpersonal and communications skills; capable of writing proposals or papers, acting as a vendor liaison, making presentations to customers or client audiences or professional peers, and working closely with upper management and outsourced service providers.

Strong listening and collaboration skills; must work effectively with application developers, QA, and Data Architects.

Strong relational database analysis and design skills; ability to translate business requirements into designs that perform appropriately.

Strong knowledge of T-SQL; ability to transfer knowledge to others.

Expert knowledge of SQL Server internals

Strong problem-solving skills.

Solid understanding of backup/recovery technologies; ability to specify requirements to the Provider and ensure the requirements are met.

Experience with Azure IAAS and PAAS

Ability to apply DBMS features/functions to solve a business problem.

Postgraduate coursework in Computer Science or Business Administration a plus

The base pay range represents the anticipated low and high end of the pay range for this position. Actual pay rates will vary and will be based on various factors, such as your qualifications, skills, competencies, and proficiency for the role. Base pay is one component of WEX's total compensation package. Most sales positions are eligible for commission under the terms of an applicable plan.
