About the Role
Ohme is looking for a commercially minded Legal Counsel with native German fluency and 2-5 years PQE to join a dynamic and growing legal team. Reporting directly to the Group General Counsel, you will play a crucial role in a fast-paced, innovative tech firm, with a particular focus on supporting our rapidly expanding German and European operations.
As our fourth legal team member, you'll be joining at an exciting time of significant European growth, with new partnerships, contracts, and market expansion across the region. The Group's legal team is based in London and manages Ohme's worldwide legal operations.
This role is ideal for a commercially astute lawyer who thrives in a high-growth environment and can balance supporting day-to-day commercial needs with contributing to our strategic European expansion. You'll have significant responsibility and autonomy from day one, and we're looking for someone who can hit the ground running and take ownership of German and European legal matters.
Our office environment is highly collegiate with extensive cross-functional collaboration across teams. You'll need to be a self-starter who can manage your own workload while also being a strong team player. We're looking for someone who is genuinely interested in technology, forward-thinking in their approach to legal challenges, and excited about working at the intersection of law, energy, and innovation.
You will work from our London office 3-4 days a week.
Key ResponsibilitiesCommercial Contracts
- Drafting and negotiating a range of commercial contracts including wholesale and other sales agreements, with a focus on German and broader European market requirements
- Supporting new partnership agreements and market entry contracts as Ohme expands across Europe
- Reviewing and assessing risks in supplier contracts across multiple jurisdictions
- Drafting and negotiating NDAs in both English and German
- Managing consultancy agreements and providing employment legal support
- Provide legal support for Ohme's European operations, with a particular focus on German-speaking countries (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) alongside other global markets
- Lead on contract reviews and negotiations in German for German-speaking territories
- Support business development and partnership activities across Europe, with particular focus on German-speaking markets
- Liaise with German-speaking customers, partners, and stakeholders in their native language
- Work on cross-border commercial transactions
- Advising on Privacy and Data Protection matters, including GDPR compliance across European markets (beneficial but not essential)
- Advising on SaaS agreements (beneficial but not essential)
- Delivering company training and providing compliance support (policies, legal updates)
- Supporting corporate governance matters (board/shareholder resolutions and company secretary functions)
- Managing external counsel across multiple jurisdictions, with particular focus on German legal advisors
- Coordinating cross-border legal matters and ensuring consistency in legal approach
What We're Looking ForEssential
- 2-5 years PQE with a commercial/corporate law background from a UK City or US firm (indicative PQE - we are open to seeing candidates with more years qualified)
- Proven commercial contract experience - demonstrable track record of drafting and negotiating commercial agreements
- Native German fluency (spoken and written) - this is essential for the role
- Strong English proficiency (professional working level)
- Qualified solicitor in England & Wales
- A proactive self-starter with a hands-on approach
- Strong drafting and negotiation skills in both English and German
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work independently
- Confidence working across all levels of the business
- Organised and commercially focused mindset
- A team player willing to pitch in and support colleagues
- In-house experience (beneficial but not essential)
- Knowledge of German commercial law, contract law, consumer protection regulations, or energy/automotive regulations
- Experience working with German clients or on German transactions
- Additional European language skills
- Understanding of the EV charging or energy sectors
- Experience in high-growth technology or cleantech companies
