As a member of the HVDC management team and a key contributor to the HSE & Sustainability Leadership team of the BU Grid Integration, you will report to the Senior VP of HVDC and have a dotted line to the BU Head of HSE & Sustainability. You will lead a global team of over 100 people.

As the Head of HSE & Sustainability for HVDC, you will collaborate closely with the BU function to develop, deploy, and implement the Grid Integration and Hitachi Energy HSE & Sustainability strategy and operating system within HVDC. You will drive improvements across a global organization, encompassing multiple office locations, manufacturing sites, test facilities, and various project and service sites. Global travel to meet with the organization, partners, customers, and to visit sites is an essential part of this role.

You will join a growing team, offering a great opportunity to develop your role and team within the company. We lead through our leadership pillars, with diversity, equity, and inclusion as our cornerstones, recognizing that everyone brings unique skills and competencies.

Your responsibilities

  • Promote HSE & Sustainability Culture: Drive and promote a strong HSE & Sustainability culture within the HVDC global EPC organization, aligning with company strategy.
  • Analyze Stakeholder Requirements: Conclude and analyze HSE & Sustainability stakeholder requirements, incident investigations, and audit results to identify patterns, root causes, risks, and trends.
  • Deliver Improvements: Provide value-added findings, opportunities for improvements, and best practices in a dynamic environment.
  • Train and Support: Train, coach, and support the organization in Health, Safety, and Environmental issues.
  • Manage HSE Systems: Own the HSE management system, assist with audits, and perform internal audits against ISO standards.
  • Lead Investigations: Lead or assist in special reviews, hazards, and incident investigations, and drive governance for tender, project, and site execution teams.

Your background

  • Leadership Experience: Background in leading HSE in larger organizations, including large projects and construction sites, preferably in matrix organizations.
  • Valued Personality Traits: Structured, systematic approach, strong drive, agile mindset, and transformational leadership.
  • Communication Skills: Solid communication and influencing skills to build trust and balance stakeholders at different organizational levels.
  • Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in English, both written and spoken, due to the international environment.
  • Educational Background: University degree in health and safety, environment, or related field; relevant experience and documented achievements can compensate for lack of formal education.
  • Technical Knowledge: Familiarity with ISO 14001:2015, ISO 45001:2018, and ISO 50001:2018; experience in law compliance, Safety by Design, environmental requirements, and chemical phase-out.
