The Opportunity

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Database Administrator to join our dynamic engineering team. The ideal candidate will have a strong database management background combined with a deep understanding of how databases really work. As a Database Administrator, you will not only mentor and guide our engineers but also participate in architectural and key decision-making forums regarding our databases, ensuring a focus is always on the reliability of our systems and centred on positive customer experience. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure the reliability, scalability, and security of our databases.

What You'll Do

  • Administer, manage, and maintain both internal development and customer SQL databases (SQL Server, Azure SQL Database, PostgreSQL).

  • Possess a good understanding of cloud platforms (e.g. Azure, AWS, GCP) to design, implement and manage cloud database infrastructure.

  • Automate administrative tasks and improve operational efficiency through scripting (e.g. PowerShell, Python).

  • Monitor, analyse and optimise database performance across a large database estate.

  • Troubleshoot and resolve reported database-related issues, providing timely and effective solutions.

  • Collaborate with development teams to design and implement robust database solutions.

  • Act as the database Subject Matter Expert (SME) during the investigation and resolution of live customer incidents.

  • Ensure data security, privacy, and compliance with all applicable policies and standards.

  • Undertake database project work as required

What We're Looking For

Qualifications:

  • Education:Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field or equivalent practical experience.

  • Experience:5+ years of experience in a Database Administration or related role with at least 2 of those years working in a cloud database environment.

  • Cloud Technologies:Good knowledge and understanding of cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, GCP)

  • Database Technologies:Progressive experience with boxed databases (e.g. SQL Server and PostgreSQL) together with hands-on experience of cloud database management (e.g. Azure SQL Database, Amazon Aurora, GCP Cloud SQL).

  • Architectural Design:Proven experience in providing oversight, with a strong ability to make informed decisions that drive system performance and scalability.

  • Scripting:Strong SQL skills (including TSQL and PL/pgSQL) together with proficiency in languages such as PowerShell and Python.

  • DataOps: Experience with version control systems and CI/CD pipelines for database changes.

  • Monitoring and Logging:Familiarity with monitoring and logging tools like Prometheus, Grafana and DataDog.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Database certifications (SQL Server, PostgreSQL) and/or cloud certifications (Azure, AWS, GCP) are highly desirable.

  • Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams.

  • Knowledge of security best practices and compliance standards in cloud database environments.

  • Familiarity with NoSQL technologies.

  • Exposure to containerization.
