Key Responsibilities
  • Take overall responsibility for the safe operation, maintenance and reliability of all vessel machinery, propulsion and engineering systems.
  • Perform fault finding, diagnostics and repairs on mechanical, electrical and hydraulic systems onboard.
  • Manage and maintain the vessel's Planned Maintenance System (PMS) and ensure maintenance activities are completed in accordance with company procedures.
  • Monitor machinery performance and identify preventative maintenance requirements to minimise operational downtime.
  • Manage spare parts inventory, technical stores and consumables onboard.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety, environmental and statutory requirements relating to vessel operations and engineering systems.
  • Liaise with shore-based technical management regarding repairs, maintenance requirements and procurement of spare parts.
  • Operate independently and provide engineering support during operations in remote locations where shore-side assistance may not be immediately available.
  • Operate and maintain hydraulic equipment, winches and associated deck machinery as required.
  • Support deck operations during periods of intensive activity or reduced manning, including assisting with towing and operational activities where necessary.
  • Assist with the operation of the vessel's knuckle boom crane where qualified and required.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, machinery logs and statutory documentation.
  • Participate in emergency drills and emergency response activities in accordance with company procedures.
  • Contribute to maintaining a safe, professional and efficient working environment onboard.


  • RequirementsMinimum Requirements
  • Chief Engineer Certificate of Competency appropriate to vessel power and flag requirements.
  • Valid STCW Basic Safety Training certification (PST, FPFF, EFA and PSSR).
  • Security Awareness certification (STCW A-VI/6-1).
  • Valid Seafarer's Book, CDC, SID or equivalent seafarer service record document.
  • Valid seafarer's medical certificate.
  • Good command of spoken and written English.
  • Strong fault-finding and troubleshooting skills relating to marine machinery and systems.
  • Good working knowledge of marine electrical and hydraulic systems.
  • Experience using Planned Maintenance Systems (PMS).
  • Preferred Experience
    • Minimum 2 years' experience as Chief Engineer on ASD tugs, workboats or similar vessels.
    • Previous experience working as the sole engineer onboard a vessel.
    • Experience with high-speed diesel propulsion systems such as Caterpillar, MTU or Mitsubishi engines preferred.
    • Experience with azimuth propulsion systems highly desirable.
    • Experience working with small crews in 24-hour operational environments preferred.
    • Flexibility to join vessels at short notice or extend contracts in response to operational requirements.
